NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY CORPS BILL: ETINAN LAWMAKER SPEAKS ON GREY AREA

Etinan State Constituency member in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. (Barr) Aniefiok Dennis Akpan has spoken on the State Neighborhood Safety corps which passed second reading yesterday.
Making his submissions on the floor of State house of assembly during yesterday’s plenary, Barr. Akpan relying on Sections 14(2)(b) and S318 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) confirmed that the state assembly has the legislative competence to legislate on community policing.
The lawmaker further submitted that the Neighborhood Safety Corps bill should be placed side by side with the Vigilante Registration bill also before the house to reconcile grey areas and arrive at a formidable law for the security of Akwa Ibom people.
He however lend his voice on behalf of his constituents in total support for the establishment of a Neighborhood Safety Corps in the State.
The bill which will among other functions bring police and citizens together in collaboration towards crime fighting & law enforcement.
The house thereafter adjourned plenary to Thursday 14th May, 2020.
